On Janury 11th the earthquake shook the earth, 25% of the population died. With a great tenacity people in Giarratana chose to reconstruct the town in a lower area. All the eleven churches were destroyed by the devastating fury of the earthquake between January 9th and January 11th . Near the castle there are still the ruins of the churches of Sant’Antonio and Santa Caterina while only some documents are left of the other churches.
Giarratana was rebuilt again, in the sun, in a more fertile land, open to the Mediterranean.
