Until a
few years ago the history of Giarratana referring to the
period before the Roman occupation was still obscure. But
the recent discovery of the ruins of a Roman villa and of
its mosaics has cast light upon the past of a town which
probably had a strategic role in the Roman age too. The studies of archaeologists
and the conclusions to which historians will come
studying these settlements will clear up a new cross-section
of the story of this very ancient urban agglomeration. At
the end of last century some Siculi prehistoric sites
were brought to light: "Scalone" dating back to
the second millennium B.C., "Donnascala", and
even a big bronze warehouse. But apart from the
