Art
in the "Nuova Terra" (The new land)
The chief work of art in Giarratana are its
churches. They were the first buildings to be rebuilt in
1696 and were even built before
the houses on the spur of faith and a search for God. At
first they were rebuilt in wood, according to a logistic
choice and quake proof standards. The spirituality of
that moment is lavished in the interior and in the façade
of each church as the mean to beg Gods forgiveness.
According to the historian Lauretta the Earthquake was
for people a Divine Punishment and reconstruction the way
to redeem themselves through faith and hope. These
preambles explain the reason of contrast between the
three churches of the town (San Bartolomeo, Sant'Antonio
Abate, the Mother Church) and the small houses of the
town. |
