The Mayor's presentation

Artiemestieri (Arts and Crafts) has come to its third edition with a concrete series of results to its credit both on the social-economic and cultural point of view in spite of those badly concealed attempts of boycotting perpetrated by some groups trying to pursue their mean interests.

The large request of the White Comiso Stone, the entrepreneurs‘ and workers’ resourcefulness with their necessity for organisational structures which could make them competitive, the interest of the scientific world in our precious limestone, the success obtained in Florence, the cradle of arts, by our embroideries, and the following organisational tension of our embroiderers represent today the flattering result of a three year’s job. We have tried to involve people, to praise those values belonging to the cultural heritage of our people; we must stress the fact that we have also started a fruitful collaboration with various Sicilian universities and cultural institutions among which there is the International Centre of Ethnology and History in Palermo.

If there were some understandable uncertainties during the first edition of Artiemestieri, when we started to fix a method that could change into reality a model of development based on the analysis of our territory; if the first weak signs encouraged us to go on, in 1996 too, exploiting the resources of our territory proposing our "sfilato", today we can say that our choice was the right one.

The administrative project proposed to the Town in 1994 was going to build the basis which could create employment opportunities and development, recovering legality. This project marked our research of identity, our attention to the story and the architectural beauties inherited by our forefathers. This project has been now concretely started.

Now all the essential members of our Community: Associations, Clubs, Schools and why not, Political Parties should feel this project as their own and should give their contribution to its development so that the town of Comiso might enter the third Millennium as a "VERY ACTIVE TOWN".
