Embroidery is an ornament carried out through needlework usually on cloth even using precious materials like gold, silver and precious stones. The art of embroidery is one of the most ancient and widespread among primitive peoples. This art was used to decorate formal dresses to wear in ceremonies since it was a sign of distinction as it is related in many ancient books. The Bible speaks of embroidered sails and Homer recalls the Tiro’s embroiderers.

In Comiso, just like in other towns of Sicily women skilfully wove their trousseaux or layettes using a tambour ; country, middle class or aristocratic women embellished the most important parts of their trousseaux by embroideries and laces. The difference in the noblewomen’s dowry and the country women’s one was not in the way of embroidering their cloth but in the quality and value of the same cloth and in the refinement of the filati that were used.

With the "Settimana della Contea" (the week of the county) representing the cultural web and the anthropological and historical background of handicraft, Artiemestieri is an instrument which is given substance to in the "Exhibition of Comiso handicraft productions"; it houses only high quality products and in its last edition was visited by more than fifty thousand people.
